I agree with Neal’s interpretation of the Kinderhook plate’s event as actually being faith affirming rather than faith contradicting. If Joseph had, just a few years earlier, pulled off the greatest archeologic con in history, fabricating plates that fooled 11 reliable witnesses, and faked a brilliant translation, he would either have immediately denounced the Kinderhook plates as frauds (“I’m the greatest con man, nobody is going to pull the wool over my eyes”) or else he would have made a great show of translating them as he had before so that people would no he still had the gift. As it was he comes across kind of gullible, he hems and haws and then just kind of abandons the project without a big public denunciation. It’s exactly what I would expect if Joseph had been telling the truth about everything else.
