This is Scripture Roundtable 26 from The Interpreter Foundation, in which we discuss Doctrine & Covenants Gospel Doctrine Lesson #22, “The Word of Wisdom: ‘A Principle with Promise,’” focusing on D&C 89, and also some from 49, 59, and 88, bringing in various insights to help us better understand the scriptures. These roundtables will generally follow the 2013 Gospel Doctrine schedule of scriptures, a few weeks ahead of time.
Panelists for this roundtable include Martin Tanner, Mike Parker, and Stephen Smoot.

I teach Gospel Doctrine and enjoy watching the Scripture Round table discussions for the lessons. I told my son about the lesson on the Word of Wisdom I gave today. He told me that he was told that Tea includes all teas including herbal teas… Do you have a reference on this subject? I was surprised he was told this because I know members of the church who drink herbal tea and I never thought it was a problem. Herbal teas are not my fancy…….yet….I didn’t think drinking them would be wrong….
The historical and anecdotal information was interesting. However, the analysis on the promises in section 89 was surprisingly poor. Interpretations seemed to lack real depth. Of all of the sections in the Doctrine and Covenants, there are several phrases that one could develop into a fascinating research paper. Allusions to body/resurrection in Isaiah and temple significance were completely overlooked in the discussion. Perhaps “the meat” of this section was missed. Nevertheless, I enjoyed some interesting points made. Best.
