This is Scripture Roundtable 40 from The Interpreter Foundation, in which we discuss Doctrine & Covenants Gospel Doctrine Lesson #36, “The Desert Shall Rejoice, and Blossom as the Rose,” bringing in various insights to help us better understand the scriptures and our history. These roundtables will generally follow the 2013 Gospel Doctrine schedule of scriptures, a few weeks ahead of time.

Also in reference to the “Desert blossom[ing] as the rose,” I’m not sure if this is the first reference, but on April 6, 1853, after the laying of the NE cornerstone of the Salt Lake Temple, Orson Hyde gave a prayer referencing Isaiah 35:1 –

As a reference to the question about who claimed the “blossom as a rose” first. I don’t think we completely know, but there is evidence of Parley P. Pratt mentioning Isaiah 35:1 in reference to the Salt Lake Valley in his Autobiography. See the source below.
